Current Status and Future Direction of Media Guidelines on Mental Illness
Lee jung-Suk
Abstract
Guidelines for media reporting are needed because of the significant impact that media coverage has on attitudes around mental illness. There are several media reporting guidelines, both locally and internationally, and they typically provide similar information. These include determining whether the incident involved mental illness, using appropriate and non-discriminatory language, conveying accurate knowledge about mental illness, and seeking advice from a mental health professional. To ensure active use of media reporting guidelines, intervention at the level of central ministries such as the Ministry of Health and Welfare may be helpful. In addition to guidelines, it is essential to have monitoring of media reports and institutional support to enable early detection and early treatment to prevent accidents caused by mental illness such as schizophrenia.
